ELEMENTARY BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.

A Text-Book of Elementary Building Construction. By A. R. Sage and W. E. Fretwell. (Methuen and Co. 3e. 6d. net.)—Most people have, at one time or another, felt that desire to know how a house is built which Mr. Kipling describes as haunting the Beetle in Stalky & Co. They will find all the necessary information in this work, which is written primarily to meet the wants of those who are preparing for a professional examination in building con- struction. Whilst the position of the authors, as lecturers at the London County Council School of Building, is a guarantee for their fulfilling these requirements, we can also recommend their book as highly instructive to the layman who may be thinking of having a house built for himself and wishes to have some notion of first principles.
