Robert Applegarth. By A. W. Humphrey. (National Labour Press.)—This is
an interesting record of one of the protagonists in the Trade Union movement. Mr. Applegartb, who is still living, was born in 1834, and, after spending three years in America, joined a society of Sheffield car- penters. In 1862 he became General Secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, which he built up from small beginnings to be one of the foremost Unions in the country. Be was a pioneer of Co-operation, and a leading member of the ill-fated "International."
