Santa Barbara

Sir: The Royal bride's maternal grandmother threatens to boycott the wedding if novelist Barbara Cartland is there (Notebook, 6 June); the lady, together with others, would do well to reflect that Miss Cartland, whose daughter is now married to the bride's father, is a highly paid, industrious and successful novelist. She keeps a large staff gainfully employed and is extremely loyal to her family, country and the Crown. Miss Cartland is not a tax exile, she helps impecunious stately home owners and With her huge contributions to the Inland Revenue is also helping to keep the Royal show on the road. Miss Cartland now says she will not be at the wedding as she is too old.

I am not a Hamiltonist, nor keen on romantic novelists but, with apologies to Ronald Searle, 'fair play St Trinian's, use a clean needle!'
