Pedant's end

Sir: Christopher Howse asserts (`Beer', 20 June) that the width of the platforms at St Pancras Station was determined by the size of the barrels of Burton beer stored in the cellars beneath. In fact the dimensions of the barrels determined, naturally, the dimensions of the barrel-vaulted cellars. The platforms are just platforms.
