When we know nothing about a matter, it is charitable
to believe the best. On this principle, we are inclined to admit as a matter of fact, that a short piece produced at the Haymarket, under the title of The Light Troops of St. James's, is marvellously clever. There are certain maids of honour zealously attached to the Dutchess of Marlborough; and there is a certain Master Smallbones (acted by Buckstone) whom all these ladies, for some politic purpose, try to captivate; but what that purpose is, or in- deed what is the purpose of the piece altogether, remains to us a mystery unfathomable.
