The question of attrition is a very difficult one, and

much may be said about it on both sides. It is quite possible to maintain with a show of reason the apparently mad paradox that Verdun has not been a very bloody battle. No doubt the fact that it has been raging now for nearly a hundred days without any real intermission, and that there have been some half-million combatants on each side, makes the average percentage of casualties per day small compared with that of many single-day battles. Nevertheless, the total casualties on both sides reach an enormous figure, and we are convinced that here the balance is very much against the Germans.
