The Handicap of British Trade. By W. H. Hooker. (John
Murray. 2s. ed. net.)—Mr. Hooker is an exporter to East Africa. There is not much literature about his special business, wherefore his book has some novelty as well as an interest for a restricted class. He endeavours to secure a wider Interest by his appeals for efforts to increase our trade enormously in present circumstances. On this point we hope that manufacturers, shipowners, the Board of Trade, and the War Trade Department will give him a hearing.. Tho exporter's hardships in war time are very groat, as we can easily understand, but Mr. Hooker does not believe that all am inevitable. His story proves that difficulties have not overcome his determination, which we should appreciate more fully if an incongruous facetiousness did not occa- sionally intrude upon these details of his business and larger views of international trade.
