We poor prosecutors
From Mr Edward Bowles Sir: In your leading article (20 May) you refer to the legendary incompetence of the Crown Prosecution Service, and allege that it finds 'public interest' reasons for drop- Ping cases. This is an outrageous slur. Not only is it not supported by any authority, but it is specifically refuted by the report of the Rt Hon. Lord Justice Glidewell which tome I dare say your leader writer has probably not heard of, let alone read. Your otherwise esteemed publication might better focus on the problems of the historical (and chronic) underfunding that my department has to operate under, with Just 3 per cent of the entire criminal justice budget; it might also raise its voice in sup- port of the Attorney-General and the DPP in their efforts to get the Treasury to reme- dy this pernicious ill.
