PLR
Sir: The Opposition's efforts to frustrate controversial government action for which there is no mandate are laudable, but the filibuster action by three or four Conservative MPs which killed the Public Lending Right Bill when it was so close to becoming law is indefensible. PLR is not a party issue, and in their last election manifesto the Conservatives pledged themselves to introduce legislation. There is no excuse for the Conservative failure to ensure the recent Bill's safe passage.
During the past four years writers of all political views have united in their campaign to achieve Lending Right. Those who support the Conservatives on party issues must now feel, as I do, very bitter at the party's failure to support a cause it professes to approve.
