Impenitent imperialism
Sir: John Vaizey who, in his article entitled ' Impenitent imperialism ' in your issue of October 13, wrote of the Empire in retrospect, might be interested to know of the existence of a 'British in India Museum' in the unlikeliest of places. It is in a former cough-sweet factory in the town of Colne, in north-east Lancashire, and provides a permanent exhibition of many aspects of the history of the British connection with India.
As like many others, the two men who started it had their interest in the Raj awakened by service in India during the second world war, the theme is largely military but other aspects of life in the country during the British Raj are gradually increasing in representation as the collection of exhibits grows.
Colne is high on the Pennine, but the location of the Museum is appropriately in Sun Street. L. V. Beharrell 172 Hyndland Road, Glasgow W2
