SIR,—I was very interested to read Clive Irving's article in
last week's issue of the Spectator, but I would like, if I may, to correct for the record certain figures which appear in the penultimate paragraph of the article.
Mr. Irving says the circulation of The Tittles was 240,826 at the time the Guardian came to London. The ABC net sale figure for July-December, 1961, was 253,441. Similarly, Mr. Irving says that The Times is now 240,180: the ABC net sale figure for January-June, 1963, was 254,754. For over forty years students have been entitled to have The Times at half-price, but these figures have always been included by the Audit Bureau (though shown separately) as part of The Times recognised net sale figure. It may well be that this factor caused this error in Mr. Irving's figures. R. I. FRASER Assistant General Manager (Circulation) The Times, EC4
