Owt For Nowt The burning national issue of the next

five years is going to be trading stamps, I fear. Every- body's at it, and I have even read a long analy- sis by the economist Dr. L. Sonkodi, which is pretty solid stuff but which tells me exactly what I knew already: that stamps are merely another way of getting at me. All those gimmicks merely prove that to the sales industry I am not me, but a Thing, to be milked and carved up and cozened and rooked. The one thing I'm sure of, by instinct, is that the stamp promoters are not on my side. They're bigger than me, that's all. And they'll get even bigger. By 1970 every trade will have succumbed, even the spec. builders. If you buy 5,000 bungalows you'll get a free egg- whisk. And what do you want with 5,000 bungalows? Shut up and sign that mortgage.
