From the Revd Tony Burnett

Sir: When will the little Englanders like Mr J. Booker (Letters, July 21) realise that this country would not be able to make ends meet outside the Common Market! Its all very well harking back to the halcyon days of Empire — but there was truth in what Mr Dean Acheson said a few years ago — 'England has lost an empire and not yet found a role '. The Common Market gives us a say in political decisions as well as agricultural ones and so minimises the danger of a third world war.

I hold no brief for giving up our national heritage. I miss the old money. Centigrade means nothing and as for litres and kilometres they are a nonsense — but do for heaven's sake let us give Mr Heath credit for farsightedness and back him to the hilt at the next election. The alternative would be ruination under Mr Wilson.
