Ignorant Greek twit
Sir: I, too, was at the 'Puerto Rican Pride' parade (High life, 14 June), as the Times's New York correspondent. There were indeed some 'fat, squat, ugly, dusky' people there (as there are on every street in Athens and Salonica). There was not, how- ever, any misbehaviour of any sort, or abuse. Taki is not telling the truth if he says that there was.
In stating that there has 'never been . . . a single positive contribution' by Puerto Ricans, Taki betrays his ignorance. Mea- sured as a proportion of the island's popu- lation, there were more volunteer soldiers from Puerto Rico in the second world war than from any other American state territo- ry. Of course, I am not going to ask Taki how many wars he has fought in, although I daresay he got into a scrape or two in prison.
Taki is Greek. So, for the genetic reasons of which he is so fond, he will never quite capture the nuances of the English upper- class twit. He should stop trying, and retire to his local hammam to unclog the pores of his jaded intellect.
