My other job is MP
From Mr Andrew Mullins Sir: The thought of putting duty to the state ahead of duty to family (Leading article, 21 June) reminds me of that parody of jingoism from Chariots of Fire: In my day it was King and Country first.' Whoever would try to insist that duty to one's community comes before duty to one's family contradicts the Western ethical tradition, Christian principles and simple common sense. Good leadership, Alan, If we don't do a better job looking after our children than our parents did, the world will continue in its current direction.
Andrew Mullins Sydney, Australia From Mr James Drinkwater Sir: Your leading article refers to Alan Milburn now being able to be at home 'the whole time, a fixture, a banality'. Surely he has quite a well-paid job as MP for Darlington whether in addition he does a Norman Fowler or not.
Being an MP seems to be the most lucrative part-time job in the country. Most MPs have time for other jobs, in fact the only full-time backbencher I am aware of is Dennis Skinner, who reckons it keeps him pretty busy.
I just hope we are getting value for money.
