and Hall.)—Any one who has skimmed any one of Guide's novels and recognized their inspiration, will have no difficulty in going through the same two processes with this collection of short stories. It is an advantage that they are short, and Onida must be given credit for some self-denial in not having ironed any of them out to the extent of three volumes. Nothing would have been easier for her than to do so, but we are glad that she has resisted the temptation.
