Studies in English Prose. By Joseph Payne. (Virtue.)—This book is
meant for students of English as a language, not so much for students of its literature as a literature. The various samples are chosen in chronological order, beginning with Ring Alfred, who has to be trans- lated, and ending with Mr. Ruskin. AU the earlier specimens are accompanied with full and excellent notes, making the language clear, and tracing both its origin and its development. The critical notes appended to the latter specimens are not always so sound. But it is easy to find differences of opinion, while facts are stubborn things, and Mr. Payne confesses his obligation to others for his knowledge, while he sometimes relies too much on his own judgment.
