A land fit for technicians
Sir: In his article (21 March) Joseph Chapman refers to 'East Germany.' The territory he is discussing is the Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany. It is incorrect to call it 'East Ger- many.' There are two reasons for this. If the term is supposed to be geographical it is wrong because the territory lies in Central Germany. East Germany is at present under Polish and Soviet administration pending a genuine European peace treaty.
If the term is political it is incorrect for it is used together in the article with `West Ger- many' as if both territories were of equal status. West Germany is a sovereign state. The ter- ritory Joseph Chapman refers to is a military occupation zone.
