NEWS OF THE WEEK.
ON Sunday last the King addressed to his people a letter in which he said that he and the whole Royal family were profoundly touched by the affection and devotion displayed to the late King, and by the pathetic manner in which vast multitudes had patiently and reverently awaited the oppor- tunity to pay a last tribute to his memory. "I do not stand alone," the King adds. " With such thoughts I take courage, and hopefully look into the future : strong in my faith in God, trusting my people, and cherishing the Laws and Con- stitution of my beloved Country." On Monday the King sent a letter to " His people beyond the seas " in which he said that their happiness had always been dear to the late King. "For them he lived and worked, in their service he died." After referring to the way in which his career as a sailor had given him personal knowledge of the Empire, the King promises to maintain the great heritage of the Empire " upon the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace."
