Dear old Kim

Sir: Before Murray Sayle (`My friend Kim', 21 May) quotes again from The Great Gatsby, he should give himself the pleasure of re-reading it. He will be re- minded that the comment 'it was just personal' was not uttered by Nick Carr- away, and nor does it refer to his feeling for Gatsby. In fact, it is used dismissively by Gatsby himself (and superbly by Fitz- gerald) to describe the relationship be- tween Tom and Daisy Buchanan — as opposed to the mythic quality Gatsby believes to exist in his own romance with Daisy.
