The Umbilical Cord

SIR,—Mr Nigel Lawson will, I hope, forgive me if I quarrel with at least one sentence in his article `The Umbilical Cord' (October 7). He states, as if it were a desirable object, that 'a gradual physical American withdrawal' (from Europe) 'would pave the way to a corresponding Russian withdrawal, lead- ipg in turn to the possibility of German reunifica- tipn.' Is Mr Lawson in possession of information unknown to the rest of us that he is so definite that, given an American withdrawal from western Europe, the Russians would also withdraw? And how many Britons would acclaim the reunification of the two Germanies? It seems to me time that somebody spoke up and upheld the emasculation of the Ger- many we knew before 1945.
