THE VIRGIN BIRTH
[To the Editor of THE SPECTATOR.] SIR,—The " many " Christians in the primitive Church to whom Dr. Major refers as disbelievers in the Virgin Birth were confined to the extreme wing of the obscure Jewish-Christian sect, known as the Ebionites. They rejected the doctrine of the Incarnation, and observed in part. the Jewish ceremonial law. Apart from this sect, which was quite untypical of the main tradition of primitive Christian faith and practice, there is no evidence of any disbelief in the truth of the Virgin Birth, in the early Christian Church.—Yours, &c., 3 Amen Court, St. Paul's, E.C. 4.
