Down with sex education
From Mr Rupert Fast Sir: Every word of your call to axe Section 28 (Leading article, 21 September) is to be warmly applauded. The legislation is redundant and a form of silly censorship.
But Section 28 would not exist if sex education was kept out of schools altogether. It is intrusive and a waste of time which could be used to teach other things. At the independent schools I attended, the minimal sex education we had was confined to the biological aspects; we learnt the rest in the playground. None of the pupils became parents, so presumably there was less sexual activity. Judging by recent years, there is no evidence that sex education decreases unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases.
The Tories should put the icing on the cake by encouraging schools to leave sex education to the family and concentrate on turning out pupils with better job prospects, while backing the repeal of a bad law.
