Up the Lads
From Mr David Packer Sir: I was surprised and delighted to see the Macc Lads mentioned by Frank Johnson (Shared opinion, 21 September). Their special brand of socio-political commentary ('My Pub', Toot", 'Frogbashing', etc.) and tender ballads ('Fluffy Pup', 'Do You Love Me?', 'Sweaty Betty'), along with their robust attitude to live performances, helped to make the 1980s a great time to be young, English and daft. It took me back to the good old days of my youth before the UK became Tony's Magic Kingdom.
The song mentioned is confusingly titled 'Buenos Aires '90', but is in fact a rehash of the 1982 classic 'Buenos Aires', composed at the time of the Falklands war. Simply change `Bag-fuckin' Dad' to 'Buenos bloody Aires'. Likewise 'Saddam H000sein' becomes 'Costa Mendez': you get the idea.
Mr Johnson is quite correct to point out that the Lads were right about the outcome of the Gulf war, while so-called elder statesmen were proved wrong yet again. What else would one expect from professional fainthearts like Heath and Healey?
