Member's Bills

From Mr and Mrs J. Parkes Sir: Congratulations on the excellent article (April 8) highlighting the anomalies of parliamentary procedure, particularly of Private Members Bills.

It is a scandalous situation when in a so-called democracy a Bill can be filibustered by a tiny minority, despite overwhelming support both in and out of Parliament. The live hare coursing abolition Bill is a classic example: talked out time and again though the response from the general public in support exceeded all expectations and a large majority of MPs signified approval.

One wonders whether it is only the law which is an ass; can Parliament also qualify when such outdated procedure is permitted? Doreen Parkes John J. Parkes Rough lands, Tower Road North, Heswall, Wirral, Cheshire
