Gilligan and Amanpour
From Chris Cramer
Sir: If Andrew Gilligan spent more time reporting on the tsunami and less time trying to get cheap laughs off the back of a terrible tragedy (‘The littoral truth’, 8 January), then maybe his hardworking colleagues at CNN, BBC and Sky News might just take him more seriously. In particular, his references to CNN's chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, are completely erroneous.
For the record, a large number of the correspondents from CNN (and the BBC) didn’t parachute into the region like Gilligan to pontificate about the efforts of others they are based there all the time. In the past couple of weeks their work has enabled millions around the world to understand the magnitude of what happened, helped families to be reunited and told the story of the relief efforts. They will, unlike him, report on the reconstruction long after he has left.
