Stuart links
Sir: I was fascinated to read Allan Massie's review of John Prebble's book The King's Jaunt (Books, 15 July). I was particularly interested in his revelation that: 'Charles I had learned of the outbreak of the Irish Rebellion in 1651 while he was playing golf on Leith Links.'
No doubt golf is a wonderful restorative. No doubt playing the game in Scotland has particular advantages. However, it is un- certain that Charles I could have benefited from its restorative powers two years after his execution. This suggests, either he did not receive the said item of news in 1651 or the Scottish Tourist Board has missed a trick.
