Sir: How very depressing that you feel obliged to have a 'Motoring' column (Arts, 22 July). One expects such as the Daily Telegraph to pander to Britain's overween- ing 'great car economy' but not The Specta- tor, after all, it is not as if the ownership of a particular motor-car demonstrates much intellectual ability or aesthetic judgment. So why not now a regular feature about stamp-collecting, or train-spotting? More to the point, why not a column about the merits of public transport and pleasures of railway travel, written, perhaps, by some- one who does not drive, such as
