.. Ing soliciting .al!he sincere defence of the t i t t Y of

prostitution by the girl lain 1)1 tiel-alls Jay (June 23) recalls the h e Concerned professional who (ler field invaded by all sorts of 4,tans talent. Were Jay a solicitor, I I e she would staunchly support a Noansociation. If an engineer. Mr. 16iin Would have to search far and era al° more devoted member of his attls union. 11,1:ailY Jay objects to the • e -"on of prostitution. This should !eta no surprise. Al Capone was n ,ed with prohibition, and the ' C,cla,Y Mafia are hardly lobbying rj legalisation of drugs in `‘. Like any restriction on the \........... normal flow of market forces, the prohibition of prostitution limits the number of practitioners. Only those with the economic need and the requisite nerve enter the "job market" of prostitution. The fear of legal reprisal keeps a large volume of potential practitioners out of the field. Naturally, it is in Ms. Jay's economic best interests to support the illegality of prostitution, as it keeps prices up and demand high. Open the floodgates, allow everyone to try their hand, and the market will drive prices down, thus dipping into Jay's three-figure profits. The argument that legalisation will lead more men to encourage girls into the game will not wash. Legalised soliciting will bring the prostitutes into more direct contact with their clients initially, and put the money into the hands of those who deserve it, the girls themselves. Without the spectre of the law, the pimp will lose his value. Naturally, brothels will flourish under this scheme, but they will be hard pressed by small, independent operators. I am not as familiar with the mechanics of the massage parlours as Jay, but I am sure that more advanced massages are not only the idea of evil massage operators. Naturally the encouragement is there, but the final decision rests with the girl, and if the economic motivation is strong enough, so be it.

Do not sympathise with Jay. Like all entrenched professionals in any field, she is merely protecting her own interests by advocating restrictions. Bill Harnum S7 Carlyle Road, London W5
