Hyde challenges me to show how his :ltons contributed to
the continuance of religious 'igotry and intolerance in Northern Ireland. I sub-, Mil that his own letter does this.
He, claims that during his election campaigns he .tought to 'emphasise the advantages of the British ecnnection.' In two of three elections he contested this was never in question, and in the third the Nationalist candidate polled only a very small vote 'n a three-cornered fight. To gain support, however, 1 thc Unionists must imply that all their opponents 11„eek an all-Ireland Republic. This in turn creates inc sense of insecurity which breeds prejudice, fear k lid bigotry, t, My original charge still stands" unanswered. Mr. `lYde did not denounce the Unionist use of bigotry 'Thlit he had lost their nomination. He cannot dis- 3°. elate himself from the 'song-singing females': his mtence was their encouragement.- -Yours faithfully.
