Good riddance
Sir: I am glad to see that Jeffrey Bernard is now finding solace in music (Low life, 16 January).
Only a few years ago the Coach and Horses, of which he is such a notable ornament, had an old but perfectly service- able music machine. Its table of contents was well chosen, e.g. the rarely found 'By the Rivers of Babylon'.
It was, however, said to disturb con- versation. A conspiracy was got up and the landlord persuaded to have it taken away. Its loss was felt and several patrons of the Coach and Horses decided to move on.
It was said that Jeffrey Bernard was among the conspirators. Will he now show his considerable influence in the establish- ment to have the machine restored to its place? He could then enjoy music by day as well as by night.
