Marvin's palimony
Sir: I write in defence of Lee Marvin, whom Jeffrey Bernard referred to as a 'shit' in his 11 November column (ironically, the anniversary of the end of the first world war). Unlike most American actors, famous for playing war heroes though they rarely fought for their country, Marvin served valiantly with the US Fourth Marine Divi- sion on Iwo Jima, where he was wounded. He became somewhat infamous as the first celebrity in Hollywood to be slapped with a palimony suit by a woman, well over age, who accepted his plush lifestyle for years without the benefit of a marriage licence. Bernard and this other low-lifer have given Marvin a 'bum rap'.
