Loopy loyalty
Sir: May I comment on the book review on Loopy by Sidney Vines (19 January). His remarks do justice neither to himself nor, more importantly, to Loopy Kennard. Those of us who have had the good fortune to know Loopy and have served with him, would never agree with this character assassination.
Whatever his faults, he was never 'insuf- ferably patronising' to his inferiors and the overwhelming majority, myself included, would have willingly followed Loopy any- where. We would do this in the full knowledge that, although he might not have known where he was going, it was going to be fun anyway. Loopy has many enviable qualities, including extraordinary powers of leadership, which do not come across in this book.
He was greatly admired and respected by his own regiment, which for him was the highest accolade possible.
