Sir: Raymond Keene's recent article on David Anderton's proposal to
FIDE for a code of ethics was a breath of fresh air. Were one naïve enough to consult a chess periodical on this matter, one would be struck by the silence.
Whatever the intention of this misbegot- ten legalese, it remains a threat to every active player involved in journalism. For instance, the code grants powers to dis- qualify competitors from tournaments for as ill-defined an offence as producing 'insulting' material. In any event, the truth is not a defence.
