Glass houses
Sir: Paul Johnson was throwing stones from a very exposed glass house in so vehemently attacking 'the general depravity of Britain's awful press' (And another thing, 11 April). What he writes about the Guardian could just as easily apply to the persistent vilifica- tion of President Clinton and his wife by The Spectator over the past four years. Par- ticularly apposite was his condemnation of `the iniquities of certain journalists who have created a vicious new style of unscrupulous reporting', dedicated to `hatred and malice'.
Many readers surely share the same hope for The Spectator's reporting from the Unit- ed States that Mr Johnson expresses for the Guardian, that it should 'become a decent, serious, truthful and responsible paper again'.
