One of the most dramatic civilian episodes of the war was the com- plete evacuation of Alderney by the Admiralty at moment's notice. The little population is now returning, "sans everything," but the- Pilgrim Trust has again excelled itself in a new direction. It is buying (from its " revolving " fund) seeds and tools for the bankrupt and most productive community. The population (I,350 at the most) consists largely of peasant farmers, some of whom trace an unbroken descent from the 13th century.
