Paying for de la Warr
Sir: Alan Powers writes (Six seaside litho- graphs, 16 August) that Lord de la Warr paid for his eponymous pavilion at Bexhill- on-Sea. Like hell he did. The city fathers were certainly under the impression that his go-ahead Lordship was to pay, but were speedily disillusioned once their decision was irrevocable.
How, you may ask, do I know this? My father was a prominent member of the ratepayers' association at the time.
