The Pall Mall Gazette gives a valuable but very discreditable
account of the military force within the United Kingdom. It consists, it says, of 22 cavalry regiments, numbering 400 each, or, say, 8,800 men ; and 68 battalions of infantry, or, taking as average strength 500, 34,000 men, which is increased by the higher com- plement allowed the Guards to 36,000. The total force, exclusive of Artillery, which is usually in good order, is 44,800 men, about half what we need to meet any sudden emergency. If these statements are true, or anything like true, the battalions should be brought up to their war strength, 1,200 men, without the loss of an hour. The Government relies on the Volunteers, but where are their breech-loaders ?
