EUSEBIUS, BISHOP OF CAESAREA : THE ECCLES- IASTICAL HISTORY AND
THE MARTYRS OF PALE- STINE. Translated with Introduction and Notes by H. J. Lawlor and J. E. L. Oulton. Vol. I. (S.P.C.K. 10s. 6d.)- Mr. Oulton, who is a lecturer at Dublin University, has made a new translation of Eusebius; based on the text as edited by Schwartz, which may be cordially commended. The Bishop of Caesarea was not an attractive writer, but his history of the Christian Church up to his own time, when Constantine became a convert, is of the greatest importance as an early and unique source of information, especially for the persecutions. The translation reads well and is to be followed by a volume of commentary by the Dean of St. Patrick's.
