Simple, really
Sir: Paul Johnson's article on the need for a `saviour on horseback to rescue Britannia' (And another thing, 16 July) struck a chord as he addressed, without really providing a solution, what has been at the core of Britain's ills over the last 50 years, namely the burgeoning welfare state. The simplest solution for any would-be 'saviour' would be to abolish it altogether while simultane- ously introducing a uniform income tax rate of 15 per cent. Radical, I hear you say. So radical, in fact, that the British Government has been successfully using this solution in a place with the tenth highest GDP in the world, yet one which takes up an area which could fit within the confines of the M25. I refer, of course, to Hong Kong.
