Sir: The term Essex Man was first coined by the

late Canon James Owen, Vicar of Little St Mary's and Steward of the Cambridge Union. He told me that he had used it to describe Simon Heifer and his contempo- raries, members of the Cambridge Univer- sity Conservative Association who hap- pened to have been educated at schools in Essex.
