Champagne moment

From James Young Sir: The anecdote about Ted Heath and the brandy (The Spectator’s Notes, 23 July) reminded me of an occasion at Glyndebourne some years ago, when I spotted him standing alone at the bar, carmine face atop a white dinner jacket, holding two glasses of champagne. Was one of them for a friend or were they both for him?

Alas, we shall never know.
