The question whether officials of the Allied Control Commission in
Germany who marry German wives should be required to resign their posts forthwith may not be easy to decide, but the present rule, whereby resignation in such circumstances'is enforced, can be very harsh in its operation. Marriage is a natural state for man, and it would be surprising if unmarried officials stationed in Germany for years did not sometimes meet a German girl whom they would like to marry. If they do, two courses are open to them—to marry and lose their employment, of contract an illicit connection against which no one will say a word. M* informant on this point is one who has chosen the former course *and is now trying to find new ways of earning a living. Unless there are better arguments than I have heard so far against permitting marriage, the time for a change of attitude is well overdue.
