John Wells on Jews

Sir: Driven from my peaceful home in Kensing- ton by what seemed to me an appalling volte-face in British public opinion (or at least among the makers of that public opinion), I came to Israel- spirit lifted en route by the French and Italian newspapers and magazines purchased at Paris

and Rome airports, which gave magnificently de- tailed coverage to both the war and peace efforts as well as full praise to that small band of fighters who prevented another Munich for their country and perhaps a nuclear war for the world.

En route I also read your issue of 16 June and was nauseated by the latent anti-Jewishness as expressed in the article you headline on your cover, 'John Wells on Jews.' I quote Mr Wells: 'I even began to feel quite sentimental about the million Arab refugees whose places they will be taking. The tranformation from Underdog to Over- dog has been too sudden ...'

There we have it! The Englishman can now very conveniently—after a week of watching a rela- tively new sport named Blitzkrieg (or Blintzkrieg, as they say in New York)—boo the champ because he beat the challenger too quickly, too easily and now even has the presumption to want to keep the cup! Why can't you (plural) remember who that challenger was (Nasser) and what he vowed to do to the Israeli men, women and children? Would he have searched them out in the desert to give them water (as the Israeli army has been doing), or would he have hacked them to pieces as he promised to do?
