A new terror

TO ADD a new terror to death was the achievement of Edmund Cull, who in the 18th century waited for his subjects to be safely dead and then rushed out instant biographies. The Chancellor prefers to add a new terror to debt. First the Governor of the Bank of England attacks the poor and greedy, then Mr Major gives a public wigging to those who lend to them. It is another worrying symptom of another form of his occupational disease. He and the Governor are responsible for monetary policy, and if credit is flowing too freely, they have themselves to blame. How much easier, though, to complain of impatient borrowers or to lambast pushy lenders whose promotional material flows freely through our letter-boxes and is not always in good taste! Oh dear, oh dear.
