The failure of the great house of Alexander and Co.
of Calcutta, took place on the 11th of December. The assets of the house, in hinds, coal-mines, houses, shipping, &c., are estimated at five millions sterling, and the demands at no more than three millions ; but in the balance of two millions are of course included a great many bad debts. The cause of the failure of the house in India was unconnected with the dishonouring of its drafts in this country, and arose out of the diffi. cultY of realizing fixed and other property in time to meet a heavy run made upon it.
