Mr. Nagendra Nath Ghose has written grist° das Pal :
a Study. (S. K. Lahiri, Calcutta.)—Kristo das Pal was a pioneer in the movement of which we see a later outcome in the recent " Con- gress." He aspired to see an Indian Civil Service, and, we suppose, an Indian Army. His attitude, indeed, according to his biographer, " was one of unwavering loyalty to the English power, and of regard for the rights of the Indian people." With India governed and defended by natives, there is no room for the English power, and "loyalty" can be little else than a facon de parler. This account is interesting; but we cannot quite understand Mr. Ghose's position. The end of his book is as much a complaint against Nature as against England.
