THE " SPECTATOR."] Sin,—In reply to your correspondent Major Stuart Love, I think the sunken roads in the chalk and other formations must be due to attrition, an important element in which is the gradient. This not only assists the carrying off by rain of the disintegrated surface, but also renders its destruction the greater by reason of draught animals "sticking their toes " into the ground when going
