Messrs. Dent have added to their admirable new edition of

Mr. Joseph Conrad's novels that very able and disconcerting story Nostromo (5s. net). The author in an introductory note says that it was " the most anxiously meditated of the longer novels " follow- ing Typhoon, after the completion of which ho felt " that there was nothing more in the world to write about." The central incident of the lighter full of silver was suggested to him by an anecdote that he heard in the Gulf of Mexico forty years ago.
