After the Storm

The air is heavy with the passing storm. The world revives and breathes in paradise. Through all the clusters of its blossoming The lilac dridks freshness and vivifies; And life pervades all in the weather's change As over roofs the gutters flood their rain, But brighter still grows heaven's distant range, Higher beyond the dark clouds its blue chain.

Transcendent power lies in the artist's hand That cleanses all things from impurity And from his colour-bath newly transformed • Emerge the past, life, and reality.

Then memories of half a lifetime's age Recede now with the passing of the storm: This century outgrows its tutelage To clear a way for all the years to come.

It is not some upheaval or uprising Can lead us to the new life we desire— But open truth and magnanimity And the storm within a soul afire.
